Jia Kui

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Jia Kui is a Wei commander and adviser whose distrust of Zhou Fang’s apparent defection proves decisive during Wu’s ambush of Cao Xiu’s army. Though Cao Xiu nearly punishes him for challenging Zhou Fang, Jia Kui’s warning is vindicated, and his military judgment helps save the commander when the Wei forces are routed.

Role in the Wei Command

When a message reports that Zhou Fang, the Wu governor of Poyang, has offered to surrender his region, Jia Kui recognizes that the offer may be a trap. Zhou Fang is known for his cunning, he cautions, and the circumstances warrant suspicion. Cao Rui nevertheless sends Cao Xiu and Sima Yi to investigate with a sizeable army. Jia Kui’s concern therefore enters the campaign as an internal warning, not as a decision that changes its course.

Warning and Distrust

Zhou Fang meets Cao Xiu and, to prove his loyalty, stages an apparent attempt to kill himself before cutting off his hair as a pledge of allegiance to Wei. Cao Xiu accepts this display and agrees to follow Zhou Fang’s battle plans. Jia Kui, however, has received reports that Wu forces are gathering and continues to distrust the supposed defector. His warning creates a sharp divide within the Wei command: Cao Xiu, angered by the challenge, nearly has Jia Kui executed, while morale in the army falls.

The Ambush and Its Outcome

Jia Kui’s suspicions prove correct when Zhou Fang leads the Wei army into the trap prepared by Lu Xun. The defeat is total, and Cao Xiu escapes only through Jia Kui’s military skill and judgment. The reversal establishes Jia Kui as the commander whose caution remains useful even after his superior rejects it: his earlier warning cannot prevent the disaster, but his actions help avert Cao Xiu’s capture or death. The episode also sets the successful Wu operation against the strain and mistrust within Wei’s command.
